Andy Fitzgerald
Flamenco Guitarist
Seattle, WA
Hi. Thanks for stopping by. I'm Andy Fitzgerald. I live in Seattle and perform as a flamenco guitarist throughout the Pacific Northwest.
I have been playing guitar for over twenty years now, though my passion for flamenco began while I was living in Europe in 2001. A trip through Andalucía opened my eyes (and ears) to this beautiful art form and my fascination with it has only increased with the passing years. Since that first visit, I have returned several times, both to study (primarily with Manuel Lozano "El Carbonero" in Jerez) and to simply to bask in the thick flamenco ambiance of southern Spain.
In Seattle I have studied with Marcos Carmona and am currently working as an accompanist for Rubina Carmona's flamenco dance classes at the American Dance Institute in Greenwood and for La Peña Flamenca de Seattle. Thanks to the Carmonas, I have had the rare opportunity to learn flamenco the way guitarists have learned it for centuries: first by taking lessons with a maestro, then by sitting in on dance classes with an accomplished accompanist, and in stages, bit by bit, learning to accompany dancers and singers on my own. It is upon this holistic foundation, informed by an understanding of the flamenco art as a whole, that I build my solo guitar playing.
The word "toque" comes from the Spanish verb meaning "to play." In flamenco, however, "Toque" encompasses much more than the playing of a particular composition; it is the playing of Flamenco as a whole. It is only recently that flamenco music has begun to be written down, to be frozen in a fixed medium. What I aspire to convey with my playing is the living, breathing Toque in its most full, vibrant, and inspiring form.

Ravenna Flamenco is an online multimedia magazine geared specifically toward the anglophone flamenco guitarist. In the course of my own online pursuits I have noticed that there is a lot of information out there for the beginner—and a lot of guitar transcriptions that only a virtuoso could play—but not a lot of information to fill in the rather large gap between these two extremes. The goal of Ravenna Flamenco is to provide information, tools, and resources to the beginning, advancing, and practicing musician and, as a supplement to taking lessons and/or playing with accomplished flamencos, to take some of the mystery out of how the flamenco idiom works.
Toque is a flamenco blog detailing the various thrills and spills associated with pursuing flamenco with any seriousness outside of Spain. The idea behind toque stems from my own early efforts: when I first moved back to the Northwest, I knew that there had to be a way of getting actively involved with others—I just had no idea how one might do it.Toque is intended in one sense to help others who find themselves in that position: I know that my experiences certainly aren't universal, but when one is trying to break into a new field, any insight might help. In another sense, however, Toque is intended to be simply amusing: playing flamenco can be strange stuff. My hope is that, no matter who you are,Toque will meets one of these goals for you.
In addition to playing guitar for Seattle area flamenco dance classes and forLa Peña Flamenca de Seattle, I am also the creator and administrator of SeattleFlamenco.org, a non-commercial community-focused networking resource for Seattle area flamenco artists. The purpose of Seattle Flamenco is to strengthen the already growing sense of common purpose among Seattle area flamencos and help make the Seattle metropolitan area a center for flamenco in the Pacific Northwest. Since the site is not affiliated with any particular groups, performers, or instructors, Seattle Flamenco offers an online space for artists to work together to enrich Seattle's flamenco community and for flamenco enthusiasts (both local and abroad) to learn more about what the Seattle flamenco scene has to offer.
